Book Introduction
- Students will be already grouped in their guided reading groups according to their DRA Levels.
- I will call my middle level reading group to the reading table
- "Group C will you come to the back table?"
- I will hand out the books and introduce the book title, author, and genre
- I will tell the students we are going to read a realistic fiction book
- "Does anyone know what realistic fiction is?", "What is an example of a realistic fiction book you have read on your own?" (Give students time to answer and discuss)
- I will then introduce the phonics we are going to be focusing on
- "We have been working on reading unfamiliar words based on context clues, root words, prefixes, suffixes, and syllables. While reading the book you may see some unfamiliar words but I know you can figure it out."
- "So if you see an unfamiliar word what is a technique you can use to help you figure it out?" (Give Students time to answer and discuss)
- "We are going to practice this before we begin reading"
Phonics Focus: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.4.3.A
- Use combined knowledge of all letter-sound correspondences, syllabication patterns, and morphology to read accurately unfamiliar multisyllabic words in context and out of context.
Word Work Activity
Phonics words to focus on: Immediately, unapproachable, entertainment, indecisively, overweight, unmanageable, forgettable, armory, and intermediate.
Vocabulary Focus:
- Next, I will introduce the vocabulary words
Vocabulary words: dungeon, peasants, auction, ballots, ladles, ambitions, convinces, badger, politician, obsession, and vandalized
- "Does anyone know what any of our vocabulary words mean?" (Give students time to answer and discuss.)
- "We are going to do a small activity to help you better understand the words and their meanings before reading the text.

Before Reading
I will ask the students to look at the book. I will read the brief summary that is on the back of the book and have a quick discussion about it and what the students think is going to happen, how? and why?
During Reading
- I will have the words ready on a board close by with the word and the definition below it. I will allow the students to say the word and read the definition. I will then ask the student that read the definition to use the vocabulary word in a sentence.
Before Reading
I will ask the students to look at the book. I will read the brief summary that is on the back of the book and have a quick discussion about it and what the students think is going to happen, how? and why?
- Remember to use your techniques while reading to decode any unfamiliar words and be on the look out for our vocabulary words.
During Reading
Comprehension

- While reading I will ask students that they can discuss together.
- "What are Justin’s goals?"
- "Why would he want to do that to Andrea Garey?"
- "What consequence did Justin, Carlos, and Lester receive from Coach Friedman for leaving class and disrupting the girls phys. Ed. Class?"
- "What was the big idea of this chapter?"
- After reading chapter 1 they will be assigned questions to answer in their reading journal.
- Chapter 1’s title is “Equal Rights for Boys, Too”. What are the “equal rights” that Justin wants to gain?
- What do students do on “Hat Day” in Mr. Bailey’s class?
- What is Justin good at? How do you know? What are you good at?
Fluency and phrasing
- Students will take turns reading. I will call on each student when it is their turn to read.
Word decoding
- Students will flay any unfamiliar words they see while we are reading.
- After we finish reading students will "decode" the words in their reading journal and we will go over the words the next time the group meets.

Writing Activity
- Events and details: Students identify one event and write one paragraph about the event giving several details. Students will write this in their reading journal and have it ready for discussion next time the group meets.
